In the heart of George Elementary lies the Library
Media Center ran and maintained by Ms.Barbara Frost and Ms.Vicki Vinson.
The library is equipped with thousands of books,
periodicals and references as well as computerized card catalog search
stations. The Destination Station is visualization equipment used
by the librarian to model internet and program navigation on the
computer for the students. The students then in turn may practice
in the computer labs and on classroom computers what they've seen on the
Destination Station monitor.
Each class participates in designated library time
once a week in 45 minute intervals. Aside from checking out books
each week, the students are guided through interactive lessons with Ms.
Frost and Ms. Vinson. Kindergarten through 3rd Grade focus on:
The 4th and 5th grade classes focus much of their
energy in Literacy Lab, a program designed by Dr. Ken Stamatis of
Harding University. Literacy Lab is a program used statewide to
improve students' literacy levels. For 5th grade, this is the
second year they've participated in the program, and 4th grade is in
their first year.
